February Verse of the Month: 1 Thess. 5:11

February Verse of the Month

I am a little behind getting February’s verse out there,
so here it is, without further ado!

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up… 1 Thessalonians 5:11a

This is the verse that has been on my mind and heart lately. I feel like I’ve been sucked into social media more than ever in the past few weeks. Maybe there have been a lot of social issues making headlines that catch my attention…. maybe facebook has become that good at trapping me in their snares. Either way, I’ve been making the mistake of reading a lot of comments left on viral facebook posts, blogs and news stories.

Man, it is just depressing!!

This isn’t a new revelation by any means. But sometimes you hear or read something that just stops you in your tracks and leaves you a bit unstable. All you can do is think to yourself:

How far we have come as a culture… the stuff people feel free to write and say to the internet, that I hope they wouldn’t feel right saying to someone’s face. Yet, why is it any different? People feel safe, hurling insults behind their computer screens and smart phones. Yet those words have the potential to be just as damaging or encouraging as if they were said face to face.

The good news is, that even though the Bible was written down on paper in a day when cyber bullying and social media didn’t exist, we have a God that holds eternity in the palm of His hand. He is an all knowing, omniscient God and His Word transcends time and space. Every last bit of it is as relevant today as it was then. The words of Ephesians 4:29 apply to our online lives today, just as much as they did before the invention of the internet. And we are just as responsible to choose our words wisely. Spread positive, encouraging words. If you can’t say something with love, just don’t say it (or write it).

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29
