Easy DIY Wall Stencil with a Paint Pen

Sarah Lempon May 12, 2014(updated June 8, 2018)13K+

Easy DIY Stencil

It is no secret that I love to paint…
I love to change and freshen things up with a new paint color!
But  I also like doing things fast.
I don’t like fussy stuff that takes a long time.
I felt like this wall needed something and I’ve been inspired by other
creative ladies like Vintage Revivals and stencil patterns like this one.
I chose the simplest pattern I could think of and decided to do it
without measuring anything or outlining anything first.
This project took me one hour, flat.

easy diy wall stencil with cardboard and a sharpie paint pen

How To Do it

I found a piece of thick cardboard in the basement
(I knew it would come in handy one day!)
I literally looked around my kitchen for a plate that resembled the size
I was going for. I settled on a cake plate and traced around it then cut it out.
I used a white, Sharpie Oil Paint Pen on the wall.
I did use a ruler to draw some rough guidelines on the circle so I knew
I was lining it up right. I started at the top of the wall on the left side and worked
my way down and then across. When I reached the right corner,
I folded the cardboard to fit.
NO MEASURING, NO TAPING, NO TRACING
Super fast and almost fail-proof!!

DISCLAIMER:
I have a steady hand, so I willing to risk doing it this way.
This pen will dry very fast, so if you make a mistake, there is no going back!
If you are concerned about slipping, you could always trace with a pencil first.
The pattern is very forgiving though (I even made a mistake
but you would never know), so go for it!!

Did this in my kitchen on one wall and I love it! Thank you so much for the idea! I used a large pot lid for my circles

I can totally relate to wanting to change things up quickly and easily…some might even say I have a commitment issue. So, now I have a question, will there be any problem going over the oil based paint pen…when I want to repaint? I generally use a latex for my walls. Thanks!!

Hi Leigh! I too have commitment issues :) I wrote this post a few years ago and since then, have painted over it a couple different times! LOL I almost always use Behr or Glidden latex paint and primer in one and it only took one coat to cover over the paint pen. I’d suggest lightly sanding before painting… but in all honesty, I didn’t and it turned out fine!!

I did the walls circles as a backsplash in my kitchen. I am so happy with the look !!! Originally, I was going to use wallpaper until I saw the price for a roll, yikes. This was budget friendly and had the impact I wanted…THANK YOU for sharing your idea !! :)
